Dr. Sherif Akl is a Professor of Geotechnical Engineering in the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Research Laboratory in Cairo University. He is a passionate geomechanicist who is dedicated to bridging the gap between academic research in computational geomechanics and proper utilization of numerical analysis in project design. This is the main reason for founding the Computational Geomechanics Research Group in Cairo University, Faculty of Engineering (CGRG-CUFE).
Through time, his responsibilities have increased at Cairo University, heading the Education Quality Assurance Unit in the Faculty of Engineering, and directing the Development Research and Technological Planning Center of the University. Henceforth, he always works on trying to improve the world around him just as far as his abilities would permit, as per the blessed verse from the Quran “I desire naught save reform so far as I am able.” (Hud 88).

Being the third President of Giza Toastmasters Club
On the first of July 2024, I have been appointed the President of the Giza Toastmasters Club by unanimous voting and nomination from the first president Nizaar Abdelkader and the second president Soha Kotb. I was very flattered and at the same time extremely nervous. The president has to stand at the beginning of every meeting and talk with the members and guests. The president has to be charismatic and presentable at every event and in every situation. How will I deal with the former presidents? Will they respect my authority? Will they allow me to take their place with no problems?
I remember when I first attended a toastmasters meeting. It was even before the Giza Club has been officiated. I learned a valuable lesson. Courage is not just to be able to face your fears, it is to acknowledge your vulnerabilities and imperfections and face the world without feeling the need to hide them. This is a tenet that I have espoused through my journey with Toastmasters.
It was not the fantastic story like you see in the movies where I inspired and left everbody in awe and amazement. Also, it was not all bad. I learned how to be OK with myself while facing people. I learned how to deal with opposition while in a meeting. The most important thing I learned is that the leader would never feel that he is a charismatic leader. Even though the Vice President for public relations made a very nice post about me. This is just a mirage people far away from the process might see. In reality what keeps us going is the vision and the ability to make every single decision at every moment to be inline with this vision.

Our Contribution to Terzaghi Lecture 2024
I have been blessed with some of the most incredible students, any academic could have hoped for. Despite the hustle and bustle of life in Egypt, we tried to form a group called the computational geomechanics research group in Cairo University – Faculty of Engineering (CGRG-CUFE).
A member of the group, Eng. Omar Madi worked with Prof. Akl to help with the analysis featured in Prof. Whittle’s 2024 Terzaghi Lecture. The analysis investigated the failure of Sergipe Breakwater in Brazil. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPyojupXtvw&t=4s)

The first workshop of the Egyptian Tunneling Association
I have been blessed with some of the most incredible students, any academic could have hoped for. Despite the hustle and bustle of life in Egypt, we tried to form a group called the computational geomechanics research group in Cairo University – Faculty of Engineering (CGRG-CUFE).
The work of another member of the group, Eng. Mohamed Abdelgaleel was featured in the first seminar of the Egyptian Tunneling Society for the 2024-2025 academic year under the supervision of Prof. Akl (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65txHeylbfg). The work used advanced programming to create a database comprising results from more than 15,000 finite elements models to predict tunneling induced settlements.
